FAQ

Common questions

Which is better — new or old tax regime?

It depends on your deductions. If you have significant 80C investments, home loan interest and HRA, the old regime may save more. With fewer deductions (common for younger earners), the new regime is usually better. Use this calculator to compare both side by side.

What is Section 87A rebate?

Under the new tax regime, if your net taxable income is up to ₹7 lakh, you pay zero income tax due to the Section 87A rebate. Under the old regime, the rebate applies up to ₹5 lakh net income.

Is standard deduction available in the new regime?

Yes. A standard deduction of ₹75,000 is available for salaried employees and pensioners in the new tax regime (increased from ₹50,000 in Budget 2024). In the old regime, it remains ₹50,000.

What is the 4% Health and Education Cess?

A 4% cess is added to your calculated income tax. For example, if your slab tax is ₹10,000, you pay an additional ₹400 as cess making total tax ₹10,400. The cess funds healthcare and education programs.

When is the last date to file ITR?

The deadline to file Income Tax Return (ITR) for individuals (without audit) is typically July 31st of the assessment year. Late filing attracts a penalty of up to ₹5,000 and you lose the ability to carry forward losses.
