Common questions
What is PPF?
Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a government-backed long-term savings scheme. It enjoys EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax status — meaning the investment qualifies for 80C deduction, interest is tax-free, and the maturity amount is tax-free. It is one of the safest investments in India.
What is the current PPF interest rate?
The current PPF interest rate is 7.1% per annum, compounded annually. The Government of India reviews and announces the rate every quarter. PPF rates have ranged from 7.1% to 8.7% over the past decade.
Can I extend PPF beyond 15 years?
Yes. After the mandatory 15-year lock-in, you can extend your PPF account in blocks of 5 years with or without fresh contributions. The corpus continues to earn interest during the extension period.
Is PPF better than FD?
PPF offers EEE tax status making effective post-tax returns significantly higher than FD. A 7.1% PPF return equals about 10%+ pre-tax FD return for someone in the 30% tax bracket. However, PPF has a 15-year lock-in. FD offers much better liquidity.
What is the maximum PPF investment per year?
The maximum is ₹1,50,000 per financial year per account. The minimum is ₹500. Investing before the 5th of each month ensures you earn interest for the entire month.
